Hit Refresh! Stage 1 Renovations

When we moved into our current home, I wanted color. We had moved from a house where every wall was beige and I was ready for something different. Our kitchen, living room and foyer area are very open to each other so I went with a grayish blue wall color throughout the entire main floor. But now after seven years, the grayish blue is starting to feel like beige all over again!

I'm also a little tired of the entire main floor being the same color. The great thing about an open floor plan is that it is, well, open. It speaks to the practical, functional side of life, but it can be challenging to define spaces and make them feel cozy when one space flows into another. This aspect of open floor living can be daunting.

So my first decision was whether to go with one color palette throughout the main floor again, or whether to divide and conquer! The living room and kitchen are open to a sitting room and the foyer. This is the sitting room/ foyer area off the main living room. This poor "room" has never known what it wants to be!

Sitting Room/ Foyer

I decided to divide and conquer. I have an arched entryway from the foyer/ sitting room into the living room/kitchen, so I'm treating the kitchen and living as a separate space from the foyer/ sitting room.

Now, don't worry, my pathetically unused and ignored sitting room is going to get a makeover too, but stage #1 is the Living Room & Kitchen area.

The kitchen will be an extension of the living room based on this design collage I put together. The trim, walls and rug will be black and white. This basic palette allows me to use my existing furniture and add color and texture with pillows, and accessories. I think that it will also showcase our existing art much more than the grayish blue.

The painters have been here off and on for two weeks and the refresh is underway! Stay tuned for the results!

  7. Awesome! Totally digging the dark trim. I think we're putting a divider similar to yours in our new house. The cabinet thing with the column that divides the space. :)

    1. I really like how ours gives you somewhat of a break in the spaces even though it's an open floor plan.

  8. Looking forward to it. And it's rather nice and inspiring that you don't settle with the layout you've lived with for many years now. A bit of shake-up is necessary every once in a while, so we'd know where we stand now, at this point, literally.
